The Old Port of Mykonos is a seaport located in the bay of Mykonos, a small island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades archipelago in Greece. The port of Mykonos has been a major harbour for ferryboats, fishing boats, and pleasure yachts for over two thousand years, and is today a bustling hub of activity.
The Old Port of Mykonos is surrounded by a wide array of traditional white-washed buildings, which line the winding streets radiating out from the harbour. Its walls, built by different populations throughout the centuries, create a strong yet beautiful barrier of protection from the sea. A large, curved breakwater provides extra protection from the strong Mediterranean winds and the occasional storms that pass through. Next to the breakwater, on the east side, lies the anchoring station, where visitors can find luxury boats and yachts.
As you walk through the Old Port, you will be captivated by its unique beauty and ambiance. The vibrant colours of the walls, the deep blue of the sea, and the bright white- sails of the boats, create an impressive pallet of beauty. Cafes and restaurants offer a variety of snacks, drinks, and meals. There are also many vendors selling souvenirs, clothes, and local handmade goods.
On the south side of the harbour lies the historical windmill of Mykonos. It dates back to the 16th century and it is the symbol of the island, just as its nearby cousin Delos is. The Old Port of Mykonos is also home to many historical monuments, including the Archaeological Museum, the Customs House, the Town Hall, the Library, and the tiny port of Panagia Paraportiani, which is the smallest and oldest port in the entire area.
At the northern end of the harbor, visitors will find the Statue of Anemomilos, built to honor Panagia Anemomilos (the Wind-Lover). Many locals offer boat tours around the islands, from which you can admire the beautiful scenery as you move from island to island.
The Old Port of Mykonos is an ideal destination for visitors who enjoy exploring the historical beauty of an old seaport. With an extensive selection of restaurants, shops, and activities, travellers can explore the harbour and its surroundings for days. Whether you are interested in sightseeing or simply want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, the Old Port of Mykonos is an experience you shouldn’t miss.
